Driving Economic Growth Through Defense

Fort Bliss is an engine for El Paso. As one of the largest military installations in the U.S., it is also the region’s top employer, supporting over 160,000 people. Fort Bliss’ impact on the local economy is immense, injecting about $25.6 billion into the area every year. But its role goes far beyond job creation. Fort Bliss helps drive growth in defense-related industries and attracts contractors, building strong ties between military and civilian life. Even after service, the connection its personnel have to El Paso remains —around 16% of these personnel choose to stay in El Paso after their term of service ends. With that kind of staying power, Fort Bliss doesn’t just help support the region—it helps shape it.

Ciudad Juárez A Key Trading Hub

Ciudad Juárez, located just across the border from El Paso, serves as a key center in the assembling, processing, and manufacturing of raw materials. Close integration with El Paso facilitates seamless cross-border trade, supported by several international bridges, making the region a prime location for businesses aiming to access North American markets. 20% of all U.S. trade with Mexico transits through this hub, amounting to over $151.7 billion in 2024 marking a 15.7% increase from the previous year. Additionally, over 12.7 million people enter El Paso annually through six international bridge ports of entry. Local and international business benefits from El Paso’s Foreign Trade Zone 68 (FTZ68), which offers reduced Customs duties and expedited access to the largest air cargo facility on the U.S./Mexico border. This strategic advantage enhances the region's appeal for companies involved in cross-border commerce.

New Mexico’s Economic Synergy

El Paso and southern New Mexico enjoy economic partnership in the above mentioned cross-border region. El Paso's economy is expanding, with a 2.3% annualized job growth from June through September 2024, and an average hourly wage of $22.44. Meanwhile, New Mexico's Santa Teresa Port of Entry handled $31 billion in trade in 2024, primarily in electronics, machinery, and medical instruments. This economic integration helps businesses and workers move fluidly across the region.
