El Paso’s economy began with Spanish colonial agriculture, focusing on vineyards and trade with Sante Fe and Chihuahua mining districts.
Railroads in the 1880s and Fort Bliss’ expansion boosted growth.
In the 20th century, mining and oil refineries drove expansion. Military growth, especially during both World Wars, was significant with Fort Bliss contributing heavily. By the 1980s, industries included textiles, tourism, and food processing.
The 21st century El Paso economy encompasses a major trade corridor with Mexico, advanced logistics, aerospace and defense, and an increasing life sciences education and services sector.
